Ashley decided to move to DC when she was 24 to enroll in a Master’s program at George Washington University. She is studying Political Management and is part of Notre Dame Mission Volunteers (NDMV)—a volunteer organization that places volunteers with communities around the world. NDMV teams serve with local partners to expand access to education with the belief that education is the central tool in the struggle of the poor for human dignity, self-esteem, and willpower.

Ashley chose to volunteer with CentroNía because she is passionate about youth development and community organizing—she believes wholeheartedly young people can make a difference in the world.

“CentroNía’s programs and resources for children and families to advance in their own community is what interested me the most.  Also, CentroNía’s mission statement aligns with ours well,” says Ashley.

As a volunteer for the Community Engagement and Education department at CentroNía, Ashley works directly with Studio R.O.C.K.S. and its literacy-focused tutoring program managed by Catherine Brenner (a former NDMV herself). She is a vital part of Catherine’s team who tracks student and tutor attendance, monitors student behavior, and gives feedback to tutors’ lesson plans. In addition to administrative work Ashley provides, she is also a tutor—providing reading and literacy skills support to students enrolled in the program. As a volunteer, Ashley is going above and beyond every day for students and families at CentroNía.

“CentroNía is a second home to so many families and to me it means equal opportunity for all,” says Ashley. Today she is working hard toward her careers goals and advocating for causes she believes in, and in the future Ashley plans to open her own community center in her hometown of Chicago, Illinois providing services similar to CentroNía.

CentroNía is fortunate to have incredibly volunteers, like Ashley, who dedicate their time and talent to its mission every year. Ashley’s passion and hard work as a volunteer will have a long-lasting impact on the lives of the children and families in our community.
